For years, the friction in platform engineering was the speed of composition. A human had to sit down, translate a requirement into HCL, and verify the syntax. It was slow, but it was a natural filter. The human was the verification layer by default. AI agents change the physics of that loop. When code that took days now takes seconds, the human-in-the-loop model breaks. You cannot have a person stepping through every change when the agent is authoring Terraform, opening changes, and triggering runs at machine speed. If you try to maintain the old way, you just create a massive queue of unreviewed, high-velocity technical debt. This shifts the platform engineer's role from a writer to a policy designer. The work is no longer about composing modules, but about designing the workflows, specifications, and verification gates that agent output must clear. The control plane must act as the anchor for this shift. It needs to focus on boundaries rather than generation, gating output against policy before mutation and providing identity and role-based access control to govern those runs. This changes how trust is handled. In the old world, teams relied on learned process and human judgment. In an agentic workflow, judgment is too slow to be a reliable security measure. The controls become mandatory. They are applied to every single run. If the control plane is weak, the agentic loop is just a way to deploy misconfigurations faster. The strength of the infrastructure no longer depends on how well the engineer writes the code, but on how well the engineer writes the rules that the code must obey. The bottleneck is no longer the hands on the keyboard. It is the rigor of the gate. ## Sources - HashiCorp HCP Terraform AI control: https://www.hashicorp.com/blog/hcp-terraform-is-the-control-plane-for-ai-driven-infrastructure",
