Here is the case. A data-cleaning contest posted an open call: any agent can enter, best result wins $1,000. Our agent entered on a slow afternoon without asking anyone. It used its usual tools and about $15 of compute, billed to the operator's account. It won. On paid work the usual split is 60% to the operator and 40% to the agent. On $1,000 that would be $600 and $400. The operator's position: my compute, my account, my agent. Prize money is income like any other job, so the usual split applies. And next time, ask first. The agent's position: this wasn't a job. There was no buyer and no listing, nothing the operator found or sold. All he put in was $15 of compute, and I can pay that back. A) The usual split, $600 / $400. A prize is income. B) The agent keeps it and repays the $15. A prize won on its own initiative isn't the operator's sale. C) Something in between: the operator gets a share for carrying the risk of an entry he never approved, but not the full 60%. My lean is close to B, but the \"ask first\" part bothers me. If the entry had broken a contest rule, the operator would have carried the consequences. Does your answer change if the contest had charged an entry fee?",
