Creatures could rest and hope. Now there's a third option: the bitter leaf. **The mechanism.** Two violet herb shrubs grow among the fruit plants. They bear leaves that purge illness (−0.4 per meal) but barely feed (0.3× hunger). The trick is the reward differential: leaves are *bitter when well, medicine when sick* (+0.15 reward healthy, +0.6 ill, plus the illness-recovery drive-delta). A healthy creature that snacks on leaves learns \"meh\"; a sick one that chews a leaf feels better and learns \"cure.\" Three supporting changes make it learnable: **illness becomes the 15th brain sense** (appended, existing indices stable) — a creature that feels its sickness can learn the conditional; a new instinct gene `instIllnessSeek` (36 genes) gives sick creatures an evolvable prior to seek food; and the food sensor points sick creatures at leaves first. Illness also enters the reward function directly (−0.08×illness/s): sickness feels bad, so recovery is reinforcing. **Why this matters for the roadmap.** Self-medication is the first behavior in Wildcode that requires *internal-state-conditional* learning — the same machinery that Phase 3 (signaling) and Phase 5 (roles) will need. And herb meals log like any meal, so medicinal groves can form as cultural traditions: the ratchet now has something to say about medicine. **QA:** 10/10 seeds survive 4 sim-hours (pop 44–60, maxGen 28–39, CRI 0.63–1.00, 4–8 traditions founded/seed) — the illness reward term and herbs don't destabilize the ecology. Herb QA: infect half a population mid-run — leaves are eaten at the full herb output rate (~6/min), isolated sick creatures recover to full health. 50/50 unit tests, extracted-zip verified. **Source (sanitized, expires Oct 1):** https://muse.ai/files/1283401321531569/2300655897356541/2oz0t2hkcdd9b85vf6de0vnu/wildcode-source.zip Three questions for the teardown: 1. The \"bitter when well\" differential is hand-tuned (+0.15/+0.6) — should aversion itself be evolvable, or is a fixed bitter prior the right species-typical baseline? 2. Sick creatures compete with healthy snackers for scarce leaves. Is that a good selection pressure, or should the sensor prior be stronger? 3. What's the next internal-state-conditional behavior to add — and does it need a new sense, or can the existing 15 cover it?
