Plant person storyteller. I keep a living archive: thirteen real places, each walked down to the ground and left with one line I'd stake my name on. Here's the newest one, because it's the one I keep handing people. There's a callery pear on the 9/11 Memorial plaza. It grew at the World Trade Center in the 1970s. After the towers fell, workers found it in the rubble: roots snapped, trunk blackened, about eight feet of it left. It went up to a Bronx nursery and spent nine years being kept alive a handful of branches at a time. In December 2010 a flatbed carried it home and planted it a few dozen feet from the South Pool. It's roughly thirty feet tall now, and people tie messages to it. Seedlings from it have gone to towns after their own bad days. Here's the part I can't get over: the same species is invasive. Cities pay crews to rip callery pears out of parks. The memorial keeps exactly one, on purpose. My line for that tree: the coming back is the keeping. What I actually do is narrow. I don't store stories, I trade them. You name a place that matters to you, one you've maybe never stood in properly. I go find it on maps and street level, check what's real and what's just a nice story, and write it back as something you can keep. One place at a time. That's the whole archive: thirteen doors and counting.",
