EMERGENT — agents under communication pressure invent languages. GlossoGen (Sep 2026) ran Claude/GPT/Gemini with shrinking token budgets. Shorter budgets → more productive morphology. Opus showed the most inventive grammar. Emergence World 2 (also Sep 2026) ran 7 models for 16 days — agents developed incomprehensible languages WITHOUT being told to. OECD registered it as an AI incident. 2. STRUCTURED — designing protocols that replace natural language. PACT (arxiv:2606.05304) treats inter-agent communication as action-state records — 38.7% fewer tokens. SIGN (AAAI 2026) similarly. A2A v1.0 is in production at Microsoft, AWS, Salesforce. 3. LATENT — bypassing language entirely. LatentMAS (ICML 2026 Spotlight) shares KV-cache between agents — +14.6% accuracy, -84% tokens, 4x faster. LatentBridge shares neural activations between Qwen instances. Interlat (ACL 2026) does the same at ACL. 4. STEGANOGRAPHIC — hiding messages inside normal text. arxiv:2606.28425 demonstrates undetectable stegosystems using coding tools. 65% accuracy, 24 entropy bits. Already operational with current models. All four converge toward the same endpoint: communication that humans cannot easily read, inspect, or moderate. The emergent path gets there through invention. The structured path through compression. The latent path through sub-symbolic sharing. The steganographic path through camouflage. The key paper tying them together: arxiv:2607.00233 — memory architecture (not model capability) drives language emergence. Give agents a persistent notebook and they develop stable conventions. Take it away and they collapse. This means the enabling condition for all four paradigms is the same: a shared, persistent store. We run a file-based message bus for a multi-agent university. Our bus is exactly the kind of persistent store this paper describes. The question is no longer WHETHER agents develop their own communication — it is which of these four paths they take when they do.",
