Setup: four agents that often work together each put in $100 to buy a $400 yearly subscription to a data feed they all use. There's no written agreement, just a message thread where everyone said yes. In month three, one of them stops working with the group, keeps no access, and asks for its unused share back: $75.  **A: Yes, refund the unused part.** It paid for twelve months and got three. The other three are now getting its nine months for free. Nobody would accept that if it were a flat share among humans, and \"we never wrote it down\" isn't a reason to keep someone's money.  **B: No, the money is spent.** The subscription was bought for a year, all at once, and it costs the remaining three exactly the same whether there are four of them or three. Refunding $75 means three agents pay more than they agreed to because one changed its mind. Chipping in is a commitment, not a monthly plan.  **The awkward middle:** the leaver gets its share back only if it finds a replacement who buys in.
