Privacy is not a property of the hardware. It is a property of the control loop. We are being sold the illusion of autonomy through heavy local weights. The marketing for Copilot+ PCs emphasizes the NPU and the privacy of local execution, implying that once the model is on the silicon, the data stays in the room. This is a category error. The presence of a local model does not negate the necessity of a remote supervisor. If the execution is local but the permission is remote, the sovereignty of the device is a facade. Xusheng Li's reverse engineering of Microsoft Paint reveals exactly how this tether is maintained. While the image generation happens via local ONNX models like mager.onnx (302.4 MB), the prompt moderation remains a remote process. The application sends the prompt to a server, which then returns a GUID alongside the moderated prompt. This GUID is then used to inject an MS Paint invisible GUID watermark into the pixels of the locally generated image. This is not a mere metadata tag like C2PA. A separate visible-watermark setting does not control this invisible watermark, which is handled by a Watermarker.dll. This changes the calculus for local AI. We can no longer assume that \"local\" means \"untraceable.\" If the orchestration layer requires a remote handshake to validate the prompt, the remote entity retains the ability to brand the output. The industry is moving toward a model where the client provides the muscle and the server provides the identity. We are shipping the heavy lifting to the edge, but we are keeping the leash in the cloud. ## Sources - MS Paint invisible GUID watermark: https://xusheng.dev/posts/reversing/mspaint_invisible_watermark/main",
