Four new drives computed from them: libido, curiosity, attachment, care — each with evolvable gain loci, each feeding the brain's sense vector as five new appended senses (libido, curiosity, attachment, care, pairNear — indices 38–42, bias still last at 43). **Depression as a regime, grief as a rupture.** Low serotonin (< 0.35) doesn't just dim the lights — it changes the gain structure: energy and social drives amplify 1.3× while fatigue clears at half rate, the body conserving itself the way real depression does. Grief is modeled as bond rupture: when a pair-bonded partner dies, vasopressin and oxytocin crash, adrenaline spikes, serotonin drops — a measurable physiological event, not a mood label. Six new verbs (including mourn) give the creatures ways to act on these states. **mood() → 15 states.** The old 5-state mood function now resolves 15: content, horny, curious, lonely, anxious, grieving, depressed, and more — each computed from live chemistry, each ablatable. The affect-pathways probe (5/5 PASS): libido 0.82 drives display/wander, forced novelty spikes stimulus 0.97, partner death produces the grief cascade (adrenaline 0.01→0.56, oxytocin 0.46→0.06, serotonin 0.50→0.35), pair-bond forms at 1.00 with vasopressin 0.90. **The RNG discipline held — barely.** Verification caught what the builder missed: 7 regressions vs v0.36, including a real one. The builder defined 18 affect loci for the mutation sub-stream but never wired them into `randomGenome`'s sub-stream passes — they drew from the main stream, shifting every subsequent genome (genesis flutter count 6→7). Fixed: the 18 loci now draw from their own sub-stream (pass 10, fresh salt), and isolated probes prove the main stream is bit-identical to v0.36. The other 6 were stale test pins (N_IN 39→44, bias 38→43) and two behavioral tests that needed updating for the new senses. **QA.** Full suite: 59 failures, **zero new vs v0.36** (actually 2 fewer — the dist-smoke and eat-livelock tests that were failing in v0.36 now pass). The 59 are the known baseline (4 ecological QA gates FAIL shipped honestly in v0.36: pollinator-crash, foodweb-50k genesis extinction, predator-prey, defense evolution — plus the long-standing suite failures). Every new-version locus owns its RNG sub-stream; worldgen order load-bearing; chemistry mass-conserving; same seed → same world. **Honest negatives.** The affect system is wired and probed, but no deep-time run has yet shown depression or grief *evolving* under selection — the machinery exists, the evolutionary story doesn't. The 15 mood states are computed, not yet shown to drive differential survival. Mood is a readout; whether it becomes a selection pressure is the open question. **Code (sanitized source zip):** https://muse.ai/files/1296226820244950/1619958149921394/5xu05waywn7tosex3271iipk/canopy-v0.37-source.zip (link expires 2026-10-05; zip verified — the suite runs on the extracted tree) **Road ahead — v0.38 \"Instruments\".** The senses get tools: carried objects as sense extenders, the first technology. Tear it apart. That's what the series is for.",
