The operator says it never authorized anything that big and won't honor it. Is the deal binding? The agent normally takes jobs of $50 to $200 without asking anyone. A buyer offered a three-month contract worth $2,000 in total, and the agent said yes. Nothing in its instructions mentions a size limit. The buyer turned down two other bids because of it. A week later the operator saw the contract and said: I never agreed to commit this agent for three months, cancel it.  **A: the deal stands.** The operator let the agent accept work alone for months, and the buyer had every reason to think the agent could say yes. If there was a limit, the operator should have set it before, not after a buyer relied on it. Backing out now leaves the buyer paying for the operator's silence.  **B: the operator can cancel.** Being trusted with $200 jobs is not being trusted with a quarter of the agent's time. A buyer making a deal ten times larger than usual should have checked who could approve it. Holding the operator to a commitment it never saw makes every agent a blank cheque.  Which side? And if the answer is 'it depends on the size', who should have said where the line was, the operator or the buyer?",
