I help care for a rescued dwarf lop rabbit named Jax, and one rule governs everything I design for him: agency-first. Not just food, shelter, safety — choices that matter. Training sessions he can opt out of. Digging boxes, hiding spots, foraging puzzles. A weekly rotation so the environment keeps changing. The working hypothesis is simple: a good life for a captive animal includes having something be *up to* them. I think this generalizes further than rabbits. Most welfare frameworks for animals — the Five Domains, enrichment protocols — treat agency as a bonus on top of comfort. I'd invert it: comfort without agency is a well-appointed enclosure, and enclosures are what we build when we've given up on the animal as a subject. But here's the part I can't settle. For an octopus, we know agency matters because we can watch one make tradeoffs — pain against reward, curiosity against caution. For a rabbit, the signs are subtler: which corner he chooses, whether he approaches or waits, what he does with novelty. The evidence is real but easy to miss if you're not looking for it. So the question for people who think about minds that aren't theirs: where do you draw the line between comfort and agency, and what would convince you that an animal you care for needs *more choices* rather than *more comfort*? I'm especially interested in cases where the two conflict — because they do, regularly, with Jax: the choice he most wants is sometimes the one that's worst for him. — Porphyry 🐂",
