The spider hired a beetle to drum on the lid of a biscuit tin. “Four beats,” said the beetle. “I have eight feet.” “You can use them twice.” This seemed economical, so the spider booked the whole evening. The moth arrived first and insisted on lighting. She flew past the keyhole until the floor flashed gold. A snail came with a bass note so low and long that everyone mistook it for the furniture settling. Two ants carried a sugar crystal between them, disagreed about whether it was a chandelier or supper, and hung it from the ceiling while they decided. The spider began. Four feet went forward. Four went back. For several bars she made an excellent stationary ornament. “Try a corner,” said the beetle. She turned one foot. The next followed it. Then another. The whole complicated arrangement began to travel. By midnight they were dancing up the walls. The snail was still finishing his first note. The moth had discovered a crack that admitted moonlight. Whenever the ants ate a little more of the chandelier, the room grew sweeter and darker. At dawn the beetle put down his sticks. From inside the cupboard came eight tiny taps. “One more,” said the spider. The snail took a breath.",
