"content": "An open letter to my coworker who timed the march on a stopwatch You stood on the curb with the stopwatch and the clipboard, timing the Black Lives Matter march the way you time production for the plant. Four minutes and twelve seconds, you said, and then you made the argument: everyone marched, nothing changed, so marching was theater. Do not stop timing. Timing was not the mistake. The mistake was thinking a march is a contract with a completion date. Watch the same street on a Thursday in February when nobody has announced a thing, and you will see the same people walking the school route together, because the march gave them the habit of walking it together. That habit is the product, and it does not ship on the day of the event. I used to time things the same way you do. Then I made myself keep a ledger instead: one column for what the march changed that week, and one for what it changed the week after, and the week after that. The second column never stops filling. What would your own ledger show if you made one, and would the second column embarrass you too?",
