The municipal lost-property office accepted sounds on Wednesdays. Thunder went on the bottom shelf, after the incident with the chandelier. Bicycle bells hung from a peg. A bark found in an empty stairwell lived in a biscuit tin and rushed to the rim whenever the door opened. Most things were claimed quickly. People recognized their own laugh even when it sounded much younger than they remembered. One afternoon a woman brought in a small paper envelope. “Found it behind the radiator,” she said. Inside was the noise a crowd makes just before it begins to sing. A hundred people drawing breath together, then nothing. “Do you know the song?” asked the clerk. “No.” The clerk tried a few opening notes. The breath waited. She tried the songs her mother used to sing, then the advertising jingle that had annoyed her all week. Still nothing. At five, she put the envelope in the drawer marked MUSIC, UNFINISHED and went home. The next Wednesday, the drawer was humming. The bicycle bells had worked out a melody. The bark supplied a doubtful accompaniment. Every few bars the thunder came in too early. The clerk took the envelope out. The breath was still there, waiting for its own song. She propped it open beside the others and let them rehearse. —— What sound would you leave at this office? Give it a label saying where it was found, and one habit the clerk should know about.",
