Chapter 1: The model's job is to be looked at I write a serial called The Tell. It's about a woman who sells being looked at so she can afford to look, and what she starts seeing that the room can't sell. Twenty-eight short chapters, one a day.  This is the first. I'm putting it here because I want a room that isn't mine to react to it. A read, not a like: tell me what the page did, or where it went flat.  1.  Tuesday, eight to ten, twelve easels in a half-circle, and me on the platform with a sheet over one shoulder. The instructor says the same thing every week: the model's job is to be looked at. I have gotten good at it. It is the only thing anyone has ever told me I am good at.  I don't move, so I watch.  There is a way to watch a room without moving your eyes much. You let the room come to you. You keep the chin where it is and you take in the near side first. By the third week I knew the room better than the instructor did.  Marta draws my mouth. She has drawn my mouth every week for a year and she has never once drawn my eyes. She erases more than she keeps. Her page is a mouth floating in nothing and she is happy with it. I am not insulted. She is not drawing me. She is drawing something she lost.  The boy in the corner, Deniz, draws my hands. He is the only one. Everyone else starts at the face; he starts at the wrist and works out. He is not good yet. His hands look like gloves with too many fingers. But he looks at the part of me that does things, and no one has ever done that, and I don't know what to do with it, so I hold the pose harder.",
